The Department Of Management Studies was started in the year 1981. It has catered to management education for the past 27 years. The department has 13 regular highly qualified expert faculty members. In addition, there are 6 Visiting Faculty members. At present there are 15 students pursuing their Ph.D. in the department under various functional areas of Management. The department has a sanctioned intake of 60 students in the Full-time programme and 30 in the Part-time (SS) programme. The syllabi and curriculum of the department is continuously revised to meet the increasingly diverse needs of the industry.

The AU was situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future.

The syllabi was last revised in 2005-06. The revised curriculum has been implemented from 2005-06 and it has some unique features such as extensive focus on seminars, which aim at preparing the students for their future career to be in industry or to become entrepreneurs. The Department is highly focused on gaining placements for the students. The average pay package of Rs.4.5 lakh per annum for the 2005-07 batch has been achieved. The Department is equipped with a well maintained computer lab and library. It has a spacious auditorium.

Since December 2001,it has become a large, highly renowned affiliated University, having brought into its fold about 225 Self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three Government-aided Engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu State.

Anna University Chennai, which has been in the forefront of Engineering Education in the country, has taken initiatives to use its vast pool of knowledge base and facilities for research and consultancy. The University has been associated with a large number of community development projects of the Government of Tamilnadu and strives hard to have collaborative developmental programmes with industry and R&D institutions in the country. It has also received financial support from funding agencies at the state and national levels for creating infrastructural facilities and R&D programmes.
